Cosmic Calendar Mapping

What is my understanding of ‘maps’ or ‘mapping’ ?

In mathematic ‘Map’ is known as ‘mapping’ which defines as

. a representation, usually on a flat surface, as of the features of an area of the earth or a portion of the heavens, showing them in their respective forms, sizes, and relationships according to some convention of representation

The takeaway I got from this description is distance. Maps or mapping allows me to get the idea of distance of the area and that drawn me into the idea of ‘timeline’

I’ve recently been watching Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey it is a 2014 American science documentary television series. The show is a follow-up to the 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which was presented by Carl Sagan on the Public Broadcasting Service and is considered a milestone for scientific documentaries. Carl Sagan popularised cosmic calendar, is a method to visualise the chronology of the universe, scaling its current age of 13.8 billion years to a single year.

Visualization form

I explored forms and representations to make this set of content live in different platform and I came up with using Snellen chart’s principle. Snellen chart is an eye chart that can be used to measure visual acuity or clarity of vision. The normal Snellen chart is printed with eleven lines of block letters. The first line consists of one very large letter, which may be one of several letters.

Design / Scale

I assigned X axis as the timeline based on today’s calendar. The 13.7 year lifetime of the universe mapped onto a single year. At this scale the big bang take place on January 1 at midnight the current time is December 31 and second is 434 years. This means at a human life lasts for the blink of an eye aka 0.23 second
